One of Southern California’s finest museums and Orange County’s largest, the Bowers Museum promotes human understanding through art. Its state-of-the-art facilities enable the Bowers to present world-class exhibitions from the greatest museums in the world. Its own collections are particularly strong in the areas of African, South Pacific, Asian, Native American, and pre-Columbian art, and California plain-air paintings. Its location, close to four major freeways and four miles south of Disneyland, makes the Bowers an ideal destination for visitors to Southern California.

The Bowers Museum has and continues to display many exhibits influenced by the Chinese culture. Past exhibits include: -Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor. -Master of Adornment: The Miao People of China. -Monkey King: A Journey to China. (Bowers Kidseum) -Arts of Ancient China: A 5,000 Year Legacy. (Currently a permanent exhibit. )

The Charles W. Bowers Memorial Museum first opened its doors in 1936 as a city-run museum devoted primarily to the history of Orange County.

In 1987, the city of Santa Ana closed the museum with the understanding that after careful study and a great deal of input from the community, the museum would be reopened as a totally transformed museum.

In October of 1992, the Bowers Museum (some six times larger than the original museum) successfully reopened its doors, and ever since has presented over 60 special exhibitions from all over the world, opened six permanent galleries, and watched its membership grow to 6,000 members.

The beautiful and historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts was built in 1928 in opulent Spanish/Moorish style and is beautifully preserved both inside and out. The theatre serves as home to many San Bernardino organizations including the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Carlo Ponti, Jr., the Inland Dance Theater, San Bernardino Valley Concert Association and Theater Arts International which is responsible for many of the lavish stage productions such as the Producers, The Elton John Musical—Rocket Man and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as well as more classic theater such as Mark Twain and Of Mice and Men that are presented by other theatre organizations. The California Theatre is a great venue for an intimate concert, seating 1,700 for concerts such as The Beach Boys, Los Lobos and Montgomery Gentry.

Take note of the enormous outdoor mural on the east side of the building. The mural was commissioned from renowned artist Kent Twitch ell and recalls Will Rogers’ last stage performance, which took place at this very theatre in 1935, just before his death in a plane crash in Alaska.
